Re-purposing Baby/Kid Items

Changing Table Bar Cart

I did this in our house a couple months ago and we get so many compliments! I didn't do anything to alter the changing table itself. Most people don't even realize that it's a changing table until we point it out. (Image Source)

BabyLegs Hot Pack

This looks like such a great idea! Upcycle your baby's BabyLegs into microwavable hot packs. Very minimal sewing required. (Tutorial)

Moby Wrap Skirt

Reuse your Moby Wrap as a chic beach cover-up skirt. No sew! (Image Source)

Mother's Day and cloth diapers? Sure, but Mother's Day and the Flats Challenge? The 2nd annual Flats & Handwashing Challenge is happening May 21-27 and is organized by Kim Rosas of Dirty Diaper Laundry. Besides the perfect timing of this giveaway hop & the challenge, you may be wondering what the Flats Challenge really has to do with Mother's Day. During the holidays I try to think of people who are struggling more than we are & Mother's Day is no exception. I can't believe there are moms who can't afford disposable diapers and therefore leaving dirty diapers on longer and/or rinsing & reusing disposable diapers to save money (and thinking it's the only option) like mentioned in the article that inspired the first Flats Challenge last year.

"The Second Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge is intended to raise awareness about the dangers of improper diapering techniques (reusing disposable diapers, not changing often enough for financial reasons, etc) and prove that there is a way to use cloth diapers without a washer/dryer if the situation calls for it."

Normally I encourage to use of "modern" cloth diapers rather than prefolds & flats, but no mother should think they have to endanger their baby's health in order to make their disposable diapers (aka money) stretch. Prefold and/or flat cloth diapers are an excellent option for low cost cloth diapering and are easily handwashed. For every person who signs up to do the Flats Challenge, Kim will donate $1 (up to $200) to Giving Diapers Giving Hope. For full rules regarding the Flats Challenge visit here.

WIN IT! In order to help someone participate in the Flats Challenge (or just to help with their diaper stash) we're giving away a 6 pack of OsoCozy birdseye unbleached flat diapers, a GroVia one-size snap shell in nature print, a 2 pack of neon Snappi cloth diaper fasteners and a 5 pack of Bummis fleece liners! Happy Mother's Day!

    DIY Fankenstein Door

We just bought our first house last month and have heard that Halloween is a big deal in our development because it's the only place in our area where you can walk from house to house. (We moved from the city to the country) I wanted to do something cute to decorate our front door area for trick-or-treaters but didn't want it to be too scary for my 2 year old. I saw this idea posted on the Petunia Pickle Bottom Facebook page and decided to give it a try! It was SO easy!

    What you need:
-green plastic tablecloth (unless your door happens to be green already)
    -black & white felt
    -glue & sissors

Cut the felt into the pieces shown above (the hair, 2 big white circles, 2 smaller black circles, black strips for the stitches, 2 small white rectangles & one larger black rectangle for the mouth) I found some "peel & stick" felt at Micheal's but only got it in white since I used the scraps from the hair for the rest of the black pieces. Cover the door with the tablecloth wrapping it all the way around and taping it to the inside of the door (the inside of my door doesn't look too pretty). This was the hardest part since I had to cut holes for the handle, hinges, etc. Then all you have to do is glue/stick the pieces to the tablecloth. And you have an adorable Halloween themed front door for under $10. Enjoy!

    I promise it's green in person :)

Update: Here's a better picture I took on Halloween!

    Haute Green Giveaway

The Haute Green Social Hour was a fun and exclusive BlogHer pre-party for cloth diapering, green & eco-friendly bloggers that I helped organize/co-host (and name if you didn't guess) back in August. Since I wasn't actually able to attend the conference, I'm so glad I was able to be involved in this event! I really enjoyed working with and then meeting Calley (The Eco Chic), Kelly (Kelly Wels), Katie (Pickles & Paisleys), Kim (Dirty Diaper Laundry), and Julie (Cloth Diaper Geek) who are all VERY inspiring to me. And I loved mingling with and meeting all the other like-minded bloggers at the event too! Here are a couple of my photos from the event (Can you see why people, *ahem* The Eco Chic Man, kept confusing Calley and I?) and a chance to win one of two Haute Mommy "giftable swag bags" I put together from the contents of my swag bag from the event... minus a couple things I just had to keep ;)

My "twin" Calley & I (me in the tank dress)

The *huge* Haute Green Social Hour swag bags!

*Thank you to Conserving Now for providing the tote bags for the event and be sure to visit their site for a FREE window cling that reminds you to bring your reusable bags!

Bag #1- Thirsties Duo Wrap (snaps) cloth diaper cover in Warm Stripes, CJ's Butter diaper cream (from Modern Cloth), organic oatmeal sample (from Happy Mothering) & Willow Pads Mama Cloth plus a Teething Bling necklace!

    The Willow Store Giveaway

I'm so excited because cloth diapers are a hot (haute) topic right now... everyone seems to be talking about them. Last year CBS correspondent, Natali Morris, was challenged to try cloth diapers for 30 days after an Eye on Parenting segment about cloth diapers vs. disposable diapers. Now six months later she's a convert and has even canceled her diaper service to wash them herself. Many celebrities are choosing to cloth diaper their children too and there are also some exciting things happening in the cloth diaper community as well!

On April 23rd, the Great Cloth Diaper Change was a simultaneous cloth diaper changing event that took place at over 400 locations worldwide to put cloth diapers in the record books. So far the unofficial record is 6363 participants and the official Guinness Book of World Records(tm) total is expected to be announced any day now. I co-hosted and organized the San Diego location with Heather McNamara, the executive director of the Real Diaper Association. Our location had 35 babies changed and the three San Diego County locations combined had 128 babies changed. My son just barely made it to the Great Cloth Diaper Change, he turns 2 this week and we are in full-swing potty training now!

Win your choice of a reversible Sprout Change cloth diaper or training pants from The Willow Store plus a goody bag from our local GCDC event! Two more winners will also win a goody bag from our local GCDC event! (All three goody bags include a set of cloth wipes from Sprout Change/The Willow Store too)

Also Change 3 Things is a movement to get parents currently using disposable diapers to pledge to use cloth 3 times a day. That's it. You can do it when you're home only and I promise you, it's easier than you think! (How I started cloth diapering)
